1. Keep your radio on to listen to the latest weather announcements. Store fresh batteries in case of emergency.
2. Don’t believe in rumors.
3. Evacuate from low-lying beaches or other locations which may be swept away by high tides or floods. Leave early if your only passage to high ground is over a road.
4. If your house cannot be affected by a high tide and is well-built or anchored, then it is probably the best place to be during a storm.
5. Securely fasten windows. If applicable, anchor the house with big bamboo pole or strong wires.
6. Prepare extra food, specifically those that don’t need to be cooked like canned goods.
7. Be sure that emergency cooking facilities work if they are necessary.
8. Store water as water service may be cut off or there may be leakage in waterpipes that may cause diarrhea when drunk.
9. Always prepare your flashlights and emergency lights.
10. Double check everything that may be blown away or turn loose. Flying objects are dangerous during typhoons.
11. If the eye of the typhoon has passed your house, there may be a lull lasting for a few minutes to half an hour. Stay in a safe place. Make emergency repairs during the lull if necessary. But remember that the wind will return suddenly from the opposite direction with even greater violence.
12. Don’t panic, just stay calm. Your ability to handle an emergency will be a good example to others.
